Water deionizers and demineralizers

Deionization, also called demineralization of water, consists of the elimination of ions and minerals present in the water (up to 95%), this is achieved through the use of ion exchange resins, attracting the ionized salts dissolved in the water.

A deionizer or demineralizer is a water purification equipment, with direct connection and continuous flow. This equipment performs a water filtration process through the use of mixed bed resins by ion exchange. That is why these equipments are used to remove ionized impurities from the water.

It is a frequent water purification method in laboratories for clinical, bichemical and microbiological analyzes, in the performance of analytical techniques and diagnostic tests, as well as for industrial uses, in food, autoclaves, cleaning components and parts, ultrasound baths, equipment. that require demineralized water.

Deionizers possess insoluble cation exchange and anion exchange resins. They can be presented as separate columns or as a mixed bed column. The water moves through the columns of the resin, which exchange the electrolytes for H + and OH-. Cation exchange resins are negatively charged to capture positively charged ions (cations) and anion exchange resins are positively charged to attract negative ions (anions).

What considerations should you keep in mind when using a deionizer?

You must bear in mind that the resins used by these equipment must be replaced or regenerated, according to the instructions and recommendations given by each commercial house, especially when the conductivity of the outlet water is greater than 20 mS / cm.

Therefore, it is convenient to regularly check these resins in order to check that they are not saturated and that they generate the necessary level of purity of the water, and this is done by measuring electrical conductivity, this is nothing more than the property they have. inorganic salts in solution (electrolytes) to conduct electrical energy, that is, electrical current is not transmitted by pure water.

Benefits of a water deionizer

Through the deionization of water, innumerable benefits are obtained such as:

  • High quality demineralized water.
  • Low investment cost.
  • It does not need the use of pumps, because this water purification system works with the pressure of the network.
  • The system requires little maintenance.
  • It is a system that has traceability in its operation.
  • You do not need the use of church products.
  • There is no spillage.
